Calls for Papers
SHE is currently soliciting manuscripts for two future symposia:
Ethics and Emotions in the History of Philosophy
Philosophers 'rediscovered' the ethical significance of the emotions in the latter part of the twentieth century. Yet moral philosophers have taken the emotions as a central object of study since ancient times. This symposium will publish papers that illuminate the place that emotions have played in the history of moral philosophy. Papers on all eras and figures in the history of philosophy are welcome.
Submission deadline: July 10, 2008
Ethics in the American Philosophical Tradition
It has now been four centuries since Europeans began to establish permanent settlements in the Americas, bringing with them their philosophical and ethical traditions. In the 400 years that have passed, has a distinctly American tradition in philosophical ethics emerged? If so, what are its defining features or concerns, and how does it relate to European ethical traditions? This symposium will publish papers on all aspects of the American philosophical tradition.
Submission deadline: December 15, 2008
General Submission Information
SHE welcomes submissions that uphold the highest standards of historical philosophical scholarship while advancing understanding of core issues in ethics. The journal considers submissions in all of the following areas:
- ethical theory/normative ethics
- metaethics
- applied ethics
- moral psychology
- social and political philosophy
- legal philosophy
Submitted manuscripts should adhere to the following guidelines:
- SHE publishes:
- independent article-length manuscripts. The preferred length for article manuscripts is 4,000-10,000 words, but shorter or longer submissions will be considered.
- brief scholarly replies to articles previously published in SHE. The maximum length of these replies is 1,500 words.
- book reviews—critical discussions of recently published monographs in the history of ethics. These discussions should provide analytical commentary in addition to describing the work's main themes. The preferred length for critical discussions is 2,000-4,000 words.
- The journal's language of publication is English. All quotations not in English must be translated.
- SHE requires all references to be adequately documented, but permits authors to submit manuscripts with any standard reference format (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) they wish. SHE recommends that works to which the manuscript refers often be given parenthetical references within the text. Long quotations (greater than one sentence or 50 words) should be indented. All text should be double-spaced.
- Manuscripts are considered by SHE on the assumption that the manuscript is the original work of the author(s); that it has not been (or will not be) published, either fully or in part, elsewhere; that it is not presently under consideration for publication with another journal; and that publication in SHE would not, to the knowledge of the author(s), infringe the copyright or other legal rights held by any other individual or entity. Furthermore, a condition of publication in SHE is that the author(s) agree to allow SHE to publish scholarly replies to published manuscripts .
- Manuscripts submitted to SHE must be prepared for blind review such that all information permitting the author's identity to be inferred is deleted. Other works by the author(s) should be referred to as 'Author's paper,' 'Author's book,' etc.
- SHE accepts submissions only electronically. Printed manuscripts delivered by postal mail will not be considered. Submissions should be sent as an e-mail attachment to submissions@historyofethics.org, with 'SHE submission' in the subject line. We strongly prefer that manuscripts be in .pdf, .doc (Microsoft Word), or .rtf (Rich Text Format).
- All submissions to SHE are peer-reviewed. Our editorial policy is to provide authors with an initial decision regarding publication within 60 days of submission.
